Brofman, Michael


Pianist Michael Brofman has distinguished himself as a versatile performer while still in the beginning of a promising musical career, performing frequently as a soloist, chamber musician, and vocal accompanist.   While still in high school he studied with the legendary Gyorgy Sandor, and received the Director’s Award for his chamber music endeavors with the New York Youth Symphony.  He pursued his undergraduate studies at Northwestern University studying under James Giles where he was awarded the Frida A. Pick Award for Piano and featured on Chicago’s classical radio station. Notable venues include performances at Bargemusic, Weill Hall, Le Poisson Rouge, Tenri Cultural Center, and at Harris Hall in Aspen, Colorado.  A frequent performer of new music, he has collaborated with composers Tom Cipullo, Mohammed Fairouz Donald Hagar, Michael Klingbeil, Magaret McCallister, Douglas Pew, Michael Rose, and Frank Warren and has performed with Brooklyn Conservatory’s New Music Collective and with the Aspen Contemporary Ensemble. Also, Michael has become known recently for his insightful interpretations of the art song repertoire.  As a vocal accompanist he has worked with Robert Osborne, Paul Sperry, Amy van Roekel and many others. He is also a founding member and Artistic Director of the Brooklyn Art Song Society.  Upcoming engagements include songs of Ives with Tenor Paul Sperry, Barber’s Hermit Songs with Soprano Melissa Fogarty, collaborations with members of Houston Grand Opera and Pittsburgh Opera, as well as solo recitals at Harvard University and in Williamsburg, Brooklyn.  He spends his summers at the Aspen Music Festival as a student of Rita Sloan and also continues his studies with Robert Durso of the Golandsky Insititute. Michael is currently on faculty at the Brooklyn Conservatory of Music teaching piano and chamber music.
